The POSS is administered by a variety of utility companies to ensure their potential employees have the requisite knowledge and skills to be productive, efficient power plant employees. Many companies administer the POSS as part of the application process, which means the specific regulations and conditions for the exam may vary. Your future employer will provide you with additional information regarding their POSS testing process.

This guide is great! Not only does it force its reader to stay positive about the exam process, but it lays out a target study agenda that is easy to follow and not intimidating. It also deals very nicely with obstacles that are sure to come up when studying for and taking any major exam - sometimes there are questions you simply do not know the answer to. Instead of getting bogged down with the fact that you can't answer the question, or letting it upset your flow for the rest of your studying or test taking, this guide focuses on having the reader acknowledge their limits and flaws and move past them - if it is a difficult question, don't spend half your allotted time on it because the odds are that you probably won't answer it right anyways - move on to the other questions and hedge your bets that your studying paid off and you can answer three or four others correctly in the time you would have wasted on the one you would have gotten wrong! Tons of other great tips! Nice bold headings and short subsections make you feel like you are really covering ground when you read through it. Also, very knowledgeable about the Plant Operator Selection System exam and walks its reader through the exam step by step, including how the exam is scored. I highly recommend this guide for anyone even thinking about taking the POSS exam.

These tests are for classroom use. If you are a homeschool parent, please use our homeschool Placement Tool.

The Placement Tests help determine the best level for a student to begin within the Math-U-See curriculum.

While the student is taking the Placement Test, the teacher should document observations regarding whether the student is using finger counting, touch points, or tally marks; other patterns should be noted such as missing steps, careless errors, or incorrect methods. These observations should be recorded on the Class Placement Data Sheet* or in a similar fashion.

If the student can recognize, read, and write the numbers 0-10, begin with the Alpha Placement Test. If, while taking that test, the student demonstrates mastery of Alpha content and the prerequisite skills for Beta, then the student can progress through the tests until the appropriate entry level is found. Please refer to the Math-U-See Professional Development Module (provided as part of the In-Service Training) on Placement for the prerequisite skills for each level (contact us to learn more about the In-Service Training we can provide).

Note: The Primer level of Math-U-See is generally not recommended for students in an intervention program. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation so we can help you to determine if Primer would be appropriate in your educational setting.

General Education

If the student is in grades K-3 and can recognize, read, and write the numbers 0-10, begin with the Alpha Placement Test. Kindergarten-aged students who do not meet these requirements can be placed in Primer. If the student is older, begin with the PreTest. If the student misses more than one problem at any level on the PreTest, administer the Placement Test for that level.

*For those with Professional Access, the Class Placement Data Sheet can be downloaded as a Word document. Contact us to learn more about the documentation and support provided with Math-U-See Professional Access.
